TLC Tea Break: How to propose and get married Muppet style

Recently, the Turtle Love Co. team was discussing our favorite weddings and proposals from popular culture. Although some now classic funny scenes like the mid-flight proposal between Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore in The Wedding Singer made the list, we couldn’t think of many from The Muppets, who surely must have touched upon the subject over the years. So I’ve done some youtube mining and found some matrimonial themed muppets videos for you to enjoy!

The Count proposes: Admittedly, this proposal doesn’t go the way most proposals in popular culture do, but he certainly earns points for persistence. Hopefully after the fade out he went on to count all the ways he loves her and she said yes.

“Somebody’s Getting Married” from The Muppets Take Manhattan: There are few things as uplifting as a muppet musical number (especially one that includes singing cakes!) and this song is no exception. In the youtube comments of this video someone mentioned that they had this song played at their wedding as the guests were getting seated for the ceremony, which is perfect! Although the musical number includes visits to numerous wedding related shops we don’t get a good look at the wedding rings Kermit and Miss Piggy choose. What style of wedding rings do you think they would go for?

Luis and Maria’s wedding on Sesame Street: In May of 1988, two of the humans who live on Sesame Street, Maria and Luis, tied the knot with Elmo as their ring bearer and all their friends in attendance. The episode takes a frank look at the emotions associated with a wedding with songs about everything from excitement to the anxiousness and joy of the bride and groom. Elmo, however, ends up stealing the show with his constant reminders to himself to not “drop the rings,”

Bonus video: In 2010, a man named Sid created a 3 minute short film to propose to his girlfriend Sara. That in itself is nothing extraordinary, but the stars of the short film are muppet-esque puppet versions of the couple! The film was shown in a movie theater where Sid had brought Sara, who suspected nothing. After the film was over, the lights in the theater were turned on and it was revealed that their friends and family had quietly filed in while the movie was playing and were sitting in the seats behind them. Sara accepted the proposal and the couple went on to make a sequel to the proposal video with their puppets that chronicled their wedding and honeymoon. Here is Elizabeth and Ed’s story . . .

“My husband and I fell in love on our first actual date. We lived in different cities and met on a chairlift at a ski mountain. On our second date, he asked me what my plans were for the summer (this was late April and he was a school teacher with summers off). I responded that I was headed to Tibet. ‘What are you doing?’ I asked in return. ‘If I have to go half way around the world to be with you,’ he answered, ‘then I guess that’s what I’m doing.’

Three months later he joined me on a two-week horse pack trip across the Eastern Tibetan plateau where he proposed to me on a mountaintop overlooking a monastery at around 14,000 feet. He had picked up a ring while we were en route through Hong Kong and kept it hidden in his saddle bag until the time was right, about half way through our trip. He was pretty nervous watching that saddle bag during one particularly deep river ford where the horses had to swim! The ring was too big so I did a ‘field dressing’ of duct tape around the inside so that I could wear it right away.

(This photo was taken in July, 1999, at about 12,000 feet on the eastern Tibetan plateau, to celebrate our engagement earlier that afternoon. Those are authentic Tibetan robes and finery - we were adorned by our Tibetan guide and his spouse in their own ornaments. On the hillside behind us is a sprawling Tibetan monastery and town.)”

Here is Holly’s story . . .

“Joseph and I had been dating a year or so when he finished grad school and moved eight hours away for a job. We had casually discussed marriage and Joseph would always playfully say ‘I’m waiting for you to ask me!’ So I would jokingly pop the question. One weekend when he was back for a visit, after I had fallen asleep, Joseph slipped the engagement ring on my finger and waited anxiously for me to wake up. When I finally did wake up the next morning (I’m a late riser!) I felt something odd pinching my finger and gazed sleepily over at my hand. An excited shriek alerted Joseph (and the neighbors, I think!) that I was finally awake.

Best morning ever.

And he never even had to ask!”

What an amazing proposal story! Too go to bed a single woman and wake up an engaged one sounds like something right out of a Jane Austen story!

Here’s Giacomo’s Story . . .

“Looking for an unconventional way of expressing my commitment I found your company the perfect fit. I purchased two styles of engagement rings. And then couldn’t decide which one to give my soon-to-be wife, so I gave her both! I asked her to marry me with our children present where she and I had our first date (this is the second marriage for both of us).

Everyone was in agreement, especially her!

We got married on November 6, 2009, at the Paterson Museum in New Jersey. Actually, that’s where I met her. She was bringing her class on a visit to the museum and I happen to be the museum’s director (and that was three years ago!).

We are very happy together. Some things get better each day. She wears both rings I proposed to her with: one on her hand and the aother around her neck on a chain.”

“Hi there, saw your interview with Megan and thought you may enjoy my story.

I proposed to my hubby via phone. We lived together, but I decided while on my way to a friend’s house I wanted to marry him.

Being the compulsive person I am, I called him and told him (yes, told him) that I wanted to get married. We booked our venue the next day.

As for our wedding rings, we made them ourselves at (https://www.thedevilsworkshop.ca/workshops_weddingbandworkshop.shtml). I made his, he made mine. We had them hand-engraved.

Enjoyable Proposals - Matt & Steph’s Story

Everyone LOVES sharing their engagement and wedding stories with us! We get pretty excited about these special moments and we want to share them with you! Here’s a letter we got a little while back (sorry! we’re catching up in the blog-o-sphere) from a couple who become engaged in England with a TLC ring. It’s a pretty cool story and we know you’ll love it too!

Here is Matt and Steph’s Engagement Story:

“Dear Turtle Love Committee,

Having bought a blue topaz Kennebunk ring from you (and my fiancee having loved it), we thought we’d share our engagement story.

Our story was featured on the front page of a local newspaper in Bath, England (see image below). We came to England to study abroad, and I proposed to Steph in the independent cinema by having the staff show a short film I made myself, containing photos and video the two of us took over the past 12 months here in England, before giving her the ring (I’ve attached a screen shot of the question).
