Currently Loving: Turtle Love Co’s Bronze Peanut Necklace

Although we at Turtle Love Co. are well known for our fabulous wedding rings and engagement rings, we also sell a diverse assortment of necklaces for all occasions, including some made exclusively for us. One of these lines of TLC exclusive necklaces is based on a literal interpretation of the phrase “I’m nuts about you!” and features bronze and silver versions of almonds, pistachios, and peanuts suspended on a sterling silver chain. Our Bronze Peanut Necklace is the subject of today’s Currently Loving post and Vintage Style Council member Brooke from Highly Fashion-able has put together a pin board based around an outfit incorporating the necklace.

Brooke chose our Bronze Peanut Necklace as her favorite because of its eccentric charm. She chose the theme of a carnival to surround the necklace with and says: “I kind of ran with its quirkiness and created a board that reflected a really fun and strange day where you could possibly wear the unique necklace. The look to wear with it, the possible location of your fun day, and even the music just seemed like the perfect strange, yet charming and still pretty combination.”

We love our little photo studio at TLC headquarters, but sometimes to get the best images of our vintage rings and engagement rings we have to venture into the world outside the office. Recently, Michelle Souliere, owner of The Green Hand, welcomed us into her bookstore to photograph some of our vintage rings on some of her vintage books. The Green Hand opened in 2009 and, as their Facebook page accurately states, they are “an eclectic used bookshop that encourages curiosity” whose motto is “a good book in every home and a good home for every book!”

Here at Turtle Love Co. we’re lucky enough to sell our artisan jewelry, vintage engagement rings, and eco friendly jewelry from an office in the very cool city of Portland, Maine. There are hundreds of cool things to do in our little city and to give you a selection of the best of those things we’ve asked the equally cool local members of the Vintage Style Council to recommend their favorites local recreational activities, places to eat, and places to shop. Their abdullah wraps and fried pickles are delicious and they have a well thought out allergy-friendly selection on their menu.” Drinks: “Dobrá Tea is a great place to go if you want a real cup of tea in a quiet teahouse atmosphere. They also have a good selection of treats to snack on, including some excellent candied ginger.”

Alicia- Food: “Passage to India, tucked away on cobble-stoned Wharf Street in the Old Port, is my favorite place to eat in Portland. Their samosas and chicken dansak are to die for, especially paired with a mango lassi.”

Xander- Food: “158 in South Portland for bagels, Boda for Thai food (and cocktails),” Drinks: “Local 188 for cocktails, Bard for best coffee, Crema for coffee and atmosphere.”

Adrianne- “I love Thanh Thanh 2 on Forest Ave - the squid appetizer sounds weird, but even my husband who hates the very word “squid” loved it. (It’s not cheap, though, so I’ve only had it a couple of times.) Replicating their limeade is a little bit of an obsession of mine. A favorite dinner is the duck breast at Bresca - also a rare treat. Oh, and the finely shredded brussels sprout appetizer is amazing. Boda is awesome Thai food, though the service can be a little brusque. I really like the Beef Massaman Curry. The stirfried brussels sprouts there are also incredible. (Now that we’re on the topic of brussels sprouts, there are pretty good brussels sprouts at Pai Men Miyake, too.) Shumai appetizers and chicken curry at Sapporo are a family favorite. Hmm. I’ll stop now, otherwise I”ll be going on and on.”

Meet Page Sargisson!

So, we’re super-excited to introduce the work of Page Sargisson! We’ve added a bunch of her work to the TLC collection, with some awesome options for down-to-earth wedding and engagement rings.

Page describes her Brooklyn studio as bright and happy, with a couch where she occasionally takes afternoon naps. The colors are fuchsia and orange - with two boys at home, ages 4 and 2, she doesn’t get to see pink very often. Page has always been a designer of sorts, starting at age eight, when she would knit clothes for her Cabbage Patch Kids.

In creating her jewelry, Page doesn’t always follow convention. “Too much of this world is made by machine now and everything looks sterile. I love seeing the imperfections, the hand of the artist.” Page mostly wears her own jewelry, although she and her husband found her engagement ring - a 1950′s cocktail ring - in Rome.

Page has never owned a car, and is passionate about car-less transportation. She lived in Europe for a time, and is particularly fond of the railroad. With two kids, she rarely has thirty minutes of downtime, but takes those once-in-a-while opportunities to lie in bed and read. She indulges in chocolate on a daily basis.

New Rings from Golden Times

Have you seen the ‘new’ Turtle Love Co. line of vintage rings? They are shiny, ogle-able little treasures. Each ring is one-of-a-kind, and comes from a bygone era. For example, check out the Ornate Yellow Gold Vintage Engagement Ring. It was made in 1915 (for real!) and features a .12 carat Old Mine Cut Diamond. Gorgeous, no? Aside from their affordability, one of the awesome things about vintage rings is that they are as eco-friendly as any new ring made with recycled metals. What’s more, this ring could easily have graced the hand of a Belle Époque fashionista like one of the ladies below.

Navigate the celestial plane with jewelry by Talley and Roberta Starbird

We’ve never seen anything quite like this jewelry…

The sterling silver and gold vermeil pieces by the mother and daughter Starbird team look somehow ancient and futuristic all at once. The Tempest Silver Earrings, for instance, might have been unearthed in a treasure-chest with this enchanting star chart from 1764 (above) - but then again, we can imagine them adorning the ears of some far-off future princess. And yet still, they could be a miniature map of the ocean floor.

The Moonscape Necklace (a TLC favorite!) evokes spaceships and tea ceremonies, or perhaps tea and crumpets on a moon-bound zeppelin attended by all the solar system’s most illustrious dignitaries. Anyway, can you see how this jewelry might cause one to wax rhapsodic? We’re pretty wowed by all that texture, shape and movement contained in such a small area. Each component of this jewelry is like a tiny window that opens up onto an exotic world that is both distant yet familiar.
