We’re being visited in the office today by Xander’s fabulous and well behaved dog, Bea (seen here in our Fancy Dress Friday TLC family portrait). Bea’s visit is just the icing on the cake of a productive week here at Turtle Love Co., which included everything from social media conferences to officially announcing the winners of our first annual jewelry design contest!

On Monday we shared a photo from our vintage ring shoot at The Green Hand, a magnificent used book store in Portland, Maine. Michelle, the owner of The Green Hand, helped us choose a selection of beautiful antique hardcover books to photograph some of our vintage engagement rings on. Here is our Josephine Vintage Diamond Engagement Ring resting on the gorgeous green, blue, and gold cover of one of the books. Thanks again to Michelle for letting us explore her shop- it was the perfect backdrop for our antique engagement rings and we came away with some interesting books too!

Our most popular blog post this week is Alicia’s ode to The Big Lebowski entitled “How finding my inner Dude helped me love my wedding day: 5 easy steps.” In it, she offers tips for de-stressing by taking cues from the movie’s hero like, among other things, enjoying a game of bowling.

Our Currently Loving guest posts for the week came from Carly from Miss Teacups and Laura of Fore Front Fashion, who chose our Sterling Silver Wide Vine Ring and Vintage Art Deco Style Diamond Necklace as their respective favorites. Carly’s Country-chic themed post can be found here and Laura’s 1920s flapper inspired post is here.

Now, as a bonus, enjoy this photo of Bea elegantly modeling our Classic Floating Pearl Necklace with Red Silk!

Currently Loving: Vintage Art Deco Style Diamond Necklace

Everyone knows that Turtle Love Co has a fantastic selection of eco-friendly and artisan wedding and engagement rings, but did you know we also have a great selection of vintage jewelry? Our vintage collection not only includes stunning antique engagement rings, but also a few equally gorgeous vintage necklaces. Today’s Currently Loving pin board comes to you from Laura of Fore Front Fashion, who chose our Vintage Art Deco Style Diamond Necklace as her current favorite.

Laura’s pin board is full of fabulous flapper imagery, inspired by both the Vintage Art Deco Style Diamond Necklace and her own interest in the roaring 20s. “I am a big 1920′s flapper fiend so I am naturally drawn to anything that encompasses that spirit,” she says. “I loved this necklace and pictured myself wearing it in a flapper-inspired ensemble, out on a town with my friends. Preferably in Paris in the 1920′s, but I suppose it’ll have to do around Portland instead.”

Turtle Love Co announces the winners of its first annual jewelry design contest

Turtle Love Co. is pleased to announce the winners of its first annual engagement ring design contest. Elizabeth Ryan’s Lovebirds ring took first place, and Cathy Heinz’ Lady of the Lake ring was awarded second place in the juried portion of the contest. Heather Perry’s Livinia ring won the Popular Vote, with the most votes from online voters.

Each winning design will be featured in Turtle Love Co.‘s product line, including special packaging and promotion of the artist and the winning design. In addition, the first and second place juried winners receive $1,000 and $500 respectively for their designs; the winner of the popular vote receives $1,000.

Now, here is a bit more information about the winners!:

Elizabeth Ryan began designing jewelry under the name Looka Jewelry in 2006 after falling in love with metalsmithing in college. She finds that one of the joys of being a jeweler is “creating something that others hold on to and find sentimental value in.” Ms. Ryan’s design for the contest was inspired by what she herself would want in an engagement ring. “As someone always working with my hands I liked the idea of creating a special ring that could be very wearable but also felt unique and handmade, perhaps something other artists might like to wear,” she says. The winning ring design features two birds on either side of a 5mm white topaz stone, a design choice Ryan says was inspired by a love of cute things and nature: “I liked the idea of two love birds as a representation of love and partnership…[and] a lot of my work incorporates mixed metals so I knew this design needed that touch too.”

Cathy Heinz can’t remember a time when she wasn’t creating jewelry and has been selling her creations professionally for the past 11 years. She describes her style as refined, modern, simple, and feminine but not cutesy and says that her favorite part of being a jeweler is having the ability to create any design she can imagine and making pieces that strike an emotional chord with people because “being able to participate in [people’s] lives that way is something special.” The design Ms. Heinz submitted to the contest, featuring a stone rising out of a round lake of silver, was inspired both by the legend of the Lady of the Lake and by her customers. “I’ve done quite a few engagement ring makeovers,” she says, “I wanted to make something timeless that would look just as good on the 25th anniversary as it did at the wedding.”

Heather Perry moved to Maine from Baltimore, Maryland, where she had earned her BFA in sculpture. She came to Maine for a change of pace, and she can now be found tucked in a distant corner of Maine, where the Eastern seaboard of the United States bumps up against Canada. Heather shares her home in Robbinston, Maine with her husband and 12-year-old son. Robinston is near the woods and the rugged Maine coast that inspires her work, but pretty far from everything else. So Heather’s trips to the “big city” of Portland are punctuated by visits to music stores, Japanese restaurants, and other treats she and her son can’t get in their hometown. Heather approaches her truly awe-inspiring jewelry designs as sculpture, and hand sculpts each design in wax before it is cast in recycled precious metals.

How finding my inner Dude helped me love my wedding day: 5 easy steps - Alicia

My wedding ended up being the complete opposite of everything I wanted, right down to the smallest details. I wanted an indoor winter wedding with 20-30 guests - I ended up with an outdoor summer wedding with a guest list of over 150. I wanted my husband and his groomsmen to wear grey suits, and they ended up with black tuxedos. I wanted tulips and got hydrangeas. The list goes on and on.

This sounds like the perfect recipe for a grade-A bridezilla, right?

Fortunately for myself and everyone involved in helping me plan my wedding, I was able to quiet the beast and rouse my inner Dude.

If you haven’t seen a little film called The Big Lebowski, you don’t know what I’m talking about and you have my sympathy. Do yourself a favor and see it. See it twice, even if you don’t like it the first time. Like many of the most delightful things in life, The Big Lebowski is a masterpiece that gets better with age.

Without giving away any major spoilers, I will outline the premise of the movie and give you a little glimpse into the essence of one of film’s most awesome (even inspirational!) characters.

The Big Lebowski’s protagonist is The Dude - given name Jeffrey Lebowski - played by Jeff Bridges. The Dude gets roughed-up and threatened by two thugs who break into his house, looking to collect money from a local millionaire who happens to have the same name. It doesn’t take them long to figure out that he is not the millionaire Lebowski, based on his meager dwelling and unaffected attitude, but one of them takes the opportunity to relieve himself on The Dude’s rug before exiting the scene.

The Dude is a man so laid-back, so mellow that he hardly musters a reaction throughout the entire ordeal. The only emotion he shows is disappointment that his rug - which really brought the room together - has been ruined. After speaking with his bowling buddies (played brilliantly by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi) over the course of a game, he decides to confront The Big Lebowski and ask to be reimbursed for his ruined rug. As is the case for most movies, he gets more than he bargained for.

As an ambitious perfectionist, and a lady with an anxious demeanor, The Dude is my polar opposite in almost every respect - and just who I need to channel when I’m at my most stressed.

Without further ado, I present to you:

5 Ways to Combat Wedding Woes, Inspired by The Dude:

1. Go bowling.

Your flowers aren’t important. The caterers don’t exist. The bridesmaids dresses are a distant memory - your goal is to knock over 10 little white pins. If you can’t leave the wedding world behind you for a few strings, try imagining each pin as a particularly difficult member of your family.

2. Whip up some white russians.

Listen, I’m in no way implying that alcohol should be used to alter your mood or solve your problems, I just think the white russian is the most delicious beverage on the planet. Enjoy the creamy goodness.

3. Spend time in your pajamas.

The Dude constantly looks like he just rolled out of bed, because I’m fairly certain he always just has. If everything is bananas and nothing is going right, take a day to chill out in your pjs and ignore all the crazy for a while.

4. Go for a drive.

This helped me a lot during my most stressed-out moments. It doesn’t matter where you go - just go. Focus on the road, listen to music, and don’t look at the time. Just drive and clear your mind. Things will seem simpler after you’re spent some time on the road.

Lastly, and most importantly:

5. Don’t give a $&#%.

I can’t stress this enough. As a person who cares too much about the inconsequential, I can tell you that the main reason I loved my wedding is because I made the conscious decision to let the little things go. I decided to accept what I couldn’t control - which, when you’re planning a wedding, is a LOT - and realize that whatever choices ended up being made, the day would turn out amazing.

The flowers weren’t what I wanted, but I knew they would be pretty anyway, so I went with it. The dress styles I liked best didn’t come in my size, but I knew I could make any dress work with some tailoring. The food, the location, the tuxes, everything - not getting my number one choice for any of those things was SO not the end of the world. In reality, a lot of the compromises ended up being just as special and beautiful as what I originally wanted. The more perspective you have, and the more you consider what is best for your own sanity and wallet, the happier you will be.

If you’re anything like me, your own wedding day will be amazing because the most important choice you’ve made is who you’re walking down the aisle to, or who is walking down the aisle to you: The person who brings your room together.

“Since finding the person I want to spend the rest of my life with, I’ve always had a ‘dream wedding‘ in mind,” says Carly. “This dream includes lots of vintage touches, beautiful decor, and a rustic outdoor vibe.” Carly’s pin board includes a country chic ceremony in a barn, green pressed glass goblets for the reception, a vintage wedding dress, and one of our Vintage Diamond Engagement Rings. “I’ve always wanted an antique ring and a stunning mid-length dress,” she explains.

The wedding band at the heart of the pinboard, the Sterling Silver Wide Vine Ring, is crafted by Midori Ferris Wayne in her studio in Sonoma County, California. The ring is handmade from reclaimed sterling silver and is approximately 4.5mm wide. For more information about the Sterling Silver Wide Vine Ring click here.

Currently Loving: Diamond Wedding Band by Michele Scholnick

Today’s “Currently Loving” post comes to you from one of the newest members of the Vintage Style Council, Alivia from Brunch in April. Alivia chose images of a quiet, rustic summer getaway that reminded her of her “summer happy place”:

“ If I could transport myself anywhere, it would be in the woods, or close to it, surrounded by good people and good food. The people are optional ;) I love the look of sheer, flowing fabrics, intricate lace, and crisp white linen incorporated into nature’s wildness. It started being a planning board for a pretend engagement party, but ended up being a sort of summer party, complete with a menu and were I’d like to wake up and go to sleep!”

Fancy Dress Friday: guest posts and vintage ring cases

Happy Friday the 13th, everyone!

Today’s date may have some people scared, but we’re not afraid to admit that we’ve had a great week here at Turtle Love Co.

The week began with a guest post from our Vintage Style Council Member of the Month Katherine from Of Corgis and Cocktails. She showed us one way to style her current favorite piece of our artisan jewelry, the Laurel Leaf Keepsake Necklace by Laura Serrafero. If you’re not familiar with this necklace, it’s handcrafted from 50% recycled sterling silver and has a lustrous 8mm aquamarine briolette and an engaging 8mm freshwater biwa pearl accompanying its silver laurel leaf.

We also recently acquired a new batch of vintage rings and what better way to photograph old engagement rings than by placing them in and around antique engagement ring boxes? We were lucky enough to get a gorgeous collection of vintage velvet and leather ring boxes on loan for the purpose, including this adorable case that looks rather like a pocketbook or bowling bag! We’ll let you know when the new rings are up on our website, but in the meantime, have a wonderful weekend!

Turtle Love Co. at home: where to shop in Portland

It’s always fun to find new places to shop and no one knows better about where to shop locally for vintage (and often eco friendly!) clothing and jewelry like the Portland, Maine members of our Vintage Style Council. Here are Ashley from Sweet William, Laura S. from Fore Front Fashion, Julia from Jeeze Julia, Laura D. from Sweeter Salt, and Erin from Just Plain Lovely to tell you their picks for where to find the best unusual decor, locally made accessories, fabulous second hand outfits, and more!

Portland Flea For All-Laura S. says: “If I have to find say, a wedding gift, a great dress and a living room chair, I can go to this place and most likely find everything on my wish list.”

Blanche & Mimi-Erin says: “I love the expertly curated selection of home goods and children’s items.”

Longfellow Books

Pinecone+Chickadee-Julia says: “When in need of a quirky purchase, Pinecone + Chickadee is the place to go. Record players, instant cameras and film, typewriters – they’ve got ‘em. They also have a wide selection of new indie art, both local and from Etsy artists across the globe.”

FIND-Laura S. says: “This is my go-to place to find clothes in Portland. I love the mix of vintage clothes and labels that I love. And everything is ridiculously affordable.”

The Merchant Company-Julia says this store is like stepping into an Etsy shop and “if you need a gift, a reward for your hard work, or something to do to pass the time, the Merchant Company can remedy your problems.”

Yes Books

Goodwill-Laura D. says: “I adore thrift shopping (and I think I’m pretty darn good at it) so you can’t beat Goodwill.”

Salvation Army

Bliss-Erin says: “This has always been my #1 destination for jeans, even when I lived in NYC!”

Asia West-Laura D. says: “ I find cute jewelry, scarves and awesome home decor there. I have two beautiful cabinets in shades of aged blue and turquoise that are some of my favorite things in my house.”

Encore-Laura S. says: “I go here if I’m looking for something very special (or covered in sequins). It’s a great place for me to find inspiration too.”

Fetch- Erin says: “Fetch is the best for all things puppy (& pet) related!”

staff picks

Alicia- “Siempre Mas - Before I moved to Portland from Bangor, I would come down on occasion to visit relatives and wouldn’t leave until I hit up Siempre Mas for a new piece of jewelry. They have great selection of multi-cultural home decor items as well, plus bright and beautiful clothing, pashminas, and purses. Their prices are very reasonable - especially by Old Port standards.

LeRoux Kitchen - The only thing I love as much as a new pair of earrings is a brand new item to put in my kitchen. LeRoux Kitchen is wonderland for those of us who love to cook. They have every gadget you can imagine - plus a variety of tools you never knew existed - and a wide array of gorgeous, unique dinnerware. Even if you don’t like ‘kitchen stuff’ you can go in for a snack - they have fancy chocolates and other yummy treats. My favorite, though, is their section of oils and vinegars from around the world - complete with little paper tasting cups for sampling. I dare you to try their aged 18 Year Balsamic Vinegar without buying a bottle.

Fetch - I’m always looking for an opportunity to spoil my bull mastiff, Bruno. The selection, atmosphere and customer service at Fetch in the Old Port never disappoints. Not only can you find fantastic toys, collars, leashes, food and treats for your pet, buy you can also find cards, calendars, magnets and bumper stickers to showcase your puppy pride - my favorite being a little oval sticker that says “wag more, bark less.”"

Aubin- “I get the majority of my clothing from Goodwill, both for the price and the unique quality of what you’ll find there. My other shopping weakness is books and for that I always go to The Green Hand. Michelle, the owner, has a book addiction in the best way and the store is full to the rafters with anything you could possibly want to read and everything you never knew you wanted to read!”

Xander- “I love to shop at Renys! Their window displays on Congress Street are always amusing. My favorite was the back-to-school set up, with your typical office supplies, backpacks, and college dorm paraphernalia - and then a headless mannequin embracing a mini-keg. It was dressed in clothing you would typically associate with a middle-schooler, so perhaps in poor taste, or at least just a bit misguided. They also have delightful deals on nice clothes and household goods! It’s really an essential Maine experience. I hardly ever buy books (libraries are the best!), but when I do, I indulge at Longfellow Books. They have an awesome selection of new and used books, a small but well-rounded graphic novel section, and the staff is helpful and totally eager to geek out on books… I love to thrift, and my favorite place to do that in Portland is Find.”

Currently loving: Laurel Leaf Keepsake Necklace by Laura Serrafero

We asked this month’s Vintage Style Council member of the month, Katherine from Of Corgis and Cocktails, to tell us about which piece of our artisan jewelry she’s currently loving. She chose the Laurel Leaf Keepsake Necklace made for us by Toronto artist Laura Serrafero. Here is her suggestion of how to incorporate the necklace into a green themed, nature inspired outfit:

Hi! I’m Katherine, and I blog over at Of Corgis & Cocktails, a fashion and lifestyle blog all about quirky fashion, cute pups, delicious food, and generally things that make you smile. Today I am bringing you some of my favorite items inspired by the Laurel Leaf Keepsake Necklace here at Turtle Love Co.

1 // 2 // 3 // 4 // 5

One of the first pieces of jewelry that I fell in love with at Turtle Love Co is the Laurel Leaf Keepsake Necklace. I love necklaces that feature a cluster of charms in a timeless metal, so this necklace is right up my alley. Taking cue from this classic piece, these items all remind me of bay laurel leaves in some way. The leaf print dress is perfect for a stroll in the garden, the green nail polish and bag are that perfect shade of summer leaf green, and the wedges are the perfect mix of nature with their all leather leaf decoration.

Turtle Love Co. at home: where to eat in Portland, Maine

A huge selection of beers, wines, and mead, made close to home as well as imported…There’s a deli counter in the back where you can order delicious soups, salads, and sandwiches, and up front they have everything from cat food to bandaids with a little station for hot coffee as well.”

Staff picks

Aubin- Food: “definitely Silly’s! Their abdullah wraps and fried pickles are delicious and they have a well thought out allergy-friendly selection on their menu.” Drinks: “Dobrá Tea is a great place to go if you want a real cup of tea in a quiet teahouse atmosphere. They also have a good selection of treats to snack on, including some excellent candied ginger.”

Alicia- Food: “Passage to India, tucked away on cobble-stoned Wharf Street in the Old Port, is my favorite place to eat in Portland. Their samosas and chicken dansak are to die for, especially paired with a mango lassi.”

Xander- Food: “158 in South Portland for bagels, Boda for Thai food (and cocktails),” Drinks: “Local 188 for cocktails, Bard for best coffee, Crema for coffee and atmosphere.”

Adrianne- “I love Thanh Thanh 2 on Forest Ave - the squid appetizer sounds weird, but even my husband who hates the very word “squid” loved it. (It’s not cheap, though, so I’ve only had it a couple of times.) Replicating their limeade is a little bit of an obsession of mine. A favorite dinner is the duck breast at Bresca - also a rare treat. Oh, and the finely shredded brussels sprout appetizer is amazing. Boda is awesome Thai food, though the service can be a little brusque. I really like the Beef Massaman Curry. The stirfried brussels sprouts there are also incredible. (Now that we’re on the topic of brussels sprouts, there are pretty good brussels sprouts at Pai Men Miyake, too.) Shumai appetizers and chicken curry at Sapporo are a family favorite. Hmm. I’ll stop now, otherwise I”ll be going on and on.”
