Emilie Inc. is another of Turtle Love Co.‘s 2009 Entreverge colleagues.
Emilie Inc. is a photography studio based in our own Portland, Maine that does some mighty jaw-dropping work, mostly photographing weddings. And Emilie’s story is even more interesting!
Emilie Sommer has a degree in photojournalism. In 2001, she was photographing political figures and events in Washington D.C. when she “almost accidentally” fell in love with wedding photography while photographing a cousin’s wedding. Wedding photography hasn’t traditionally been a “respectable” field for a photographer to pursue, but Emilie is part of a new generation of photographers that is turning that reputation on its head.
I particularly like the way that Emilie has taken her training and applied it to a new area of expertise - it’s something that I’ve done, transitioning from corporate real estate attorney to business owner, and something that many of our artists have done in one way or another - Michele Scholnick is a corporate attorney turned jeweler, Heather Perry draws on her background in sculpture to create miniature sculptures in gold and silver for us to wear, and Susan Bryant Caron approaches her jewelry as graphic design.
Kudos to Emilie and to all those folks who are doing interesting things with their formal training!
