  Oxidized Silver Wire Necklace

This necklace is handmade by Susan Bryant Caron in Freeport, Maine, using recycled sterling silver. The bead is made entirely of coiled wire, spiraling out from the center in a way that seems contained yet full of movement.

The spiral is a form that takes on many faces in the natural world: snail shells, the chambered nautilus, fingerprints, hurricanes, fiddleheads, and the double helix of our own DNA. The very galaxy we are a part of is arranged in a spiral, solar systems and stars and nebulae revolving around a central axis. The spiral often symbolizes rebirth, continual change, and evolution, and it predates any written language. To the Hopi of the American southwest, the spiral symbolized the broadening of consciousness after a long journey.
