As I listened to the girl recite free verse I was captivated by how her earrings, which swung back in forth as the impassioned poet spoke, reflected glorious hues picked up from her surrounding scene. Fragments from one audience member's blue checkered scarf, the warm golden light being pointed at the stage, even shards of red from the speaker's own nails glittered brilliantly against the earrings. In that moment, an entirely different poem – a living one – unfolded as a sea of our own colors bounced back upon us.
