Have you ever seen a time-lapse video of plants growing? One can easily imagine a sense of human longing and need in the way their leaves follow the sun. Over the course of a day, they reach and strain against their earth-bound roots, turning their thirsty faces to catch the full warmth of the sun.
Plants synthesize food out of sunlight and carbon dioxide, and it is that process that makes animal and human life possible. And, like us, plants have veins that are vital pathways. Branching out in a leaf, they carry organic compounds like sugar down to the roots, and from the roots spread more veins that carry water and minerals back up to the leaves. They create a circulatory system that has a pattern mirrored in all breathing things, in the fertile river delta, and even in the roads that take us from place to place.
Artist
Jen Burrall creates her beautiful jewelry in a studio in the East End neighborhood of Portland, Maine, a short walk away from breathtaking views of Casco Bay and its collection of islands. Jen comes from a family of artists, and grew up on the coast of Maine where she inherited both an appreciation for art and a strong connection to nature. Jen uses recycled metals and fair-trade gemstones to minimize the ecological impact of her metal-smithing practice.
