The kind-eyed man said, "Icho Namiki. Jingu Gaien!" and waved a graceful hand towards a line of trees that dramatically illuminated the straight path ahead of me in brilliant hues of yellow. I looked apologetically towards the youthful translator, who grinned as he explained, "It's Gingko Avenue at the Meiji Shrine. This avenue is home to the oldest surviving tree species on earth!"; I craned my neck upwards to look at the cathedral of foliage in awe. I could see the kind-eyed man and his translator smile out of the corner of my eye.
